I Smell Sex and Candy...

Erm... but due to a gloriously lacking olfactory sense, I suppose that in my case it should be "at least I've got candy", except that doesn't quite have the same ring to it on valentines day. But it does start me thinking...

What is it about such songs as that one, that makes it stick in your mind? Is it the simple tune? Is it the lyrics? A combination of both? Or the voice of the singer that blends it all together and makes it musical?

Sex and Candy Lyrics
Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had so much time
To sit and think about myself
And then there she was
Like double cherry pie
Yeah there she was
Like disco superfly
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream

Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had too much caffeine
And I was thinkin' 'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah there she was
Like disco lemonade
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream
Mama this surely is a dream
I smell sex and candy here
Who's that lounging in my chair
Who's that casting devious stares
In my direction
Mama this surely is a dream
Mama this surely is a dream
Yeah mama this must be my dream

Ok... I think it's safe to say it's not the lyrics. So is it the music?
While that doesn't translate well from the original to midi, it does have more impact than the words alone. But it's still lacking that little something that makes it burrow its way into your brain to stay. Does that mean that it has to be sung to truly be appreciated?

I'm going to say that it does.

A few other songs for me that fit this bill:
Flagpole Sitta -- Harvey Danger
Creep -- Radiohead
Mother -- Danzig
Self Esteem -- The Offspring
Save Tonight -- Eagle Eye Cherry

What do you all think and what are some of the tunes that pleasantly get stuck in your heads?

Not only do I have that song in my head, but now I have the video too. Thanks, LL!

Oh, almost forgot... how does the synth intro to The Final Countdown, by Europe go? You're welcome.

Almost every Fatboy Slim song gets stuck in my head. Weapon of Choice, Rockefeller Skank, Praise You - it's like a jam session in my skull.

And remember, breath in through the mouth, out through the nose.

Or whatever.

uh... is it taking anyone's name in vain if it's in a jumble? Just checking.

I see you all missed the part where I said what songs PLEASANTLY get stuck in your head...

" whenever I visit this blog I get REM's song stuck in my head."

I've told you before, but yours always made me think of Bark at the Moon. I'm over that now, hopefully, you will be one day as well.

" Not only do I have that song in my head, but now I have the video too. Thanks, LL!"

Anytime. I'm always here to help... erm... which song though, the REM song or Marcy's Playground? 'Cause with a title like sex and candy, I can imagine the video is a complete letdown.

" Almost every Fatboy Slim song gets stuck in my head. "

I'm kinda glad that I wouldn't know a Fatboy Slim song if I heard it. However, I've been told their music is much better than it sounds.

" If you walk without rhythm,
you won't attract the worm..."

What if it's a syncopated rhythm?

It always seems the last CD I listen to gets stuck in my head. Have you ever heard of a group called The Muffs? Very little known. I listened to a CD of theirs the other day and I've been listening to it ever since.

The Muffs you say? Nope... never heard of them, what do they sound like?

The Sex and Candy video is surreal and nothing at all to do with sex or candy, much less sex and candy. It starts out with the singer with his head through a floor and spiders crawling around him.

Here's the video:

Disco lemonade sucks. Long live Rock 'n Roll lemonade!

FUN FACT Spending all day writing pointless comments on other peoples' blogs is much easier than writing a post of your own.
