Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution...

But there are certain bands that make you think that...

I stayed up waaaaaay too late one night earlier this month watching the 5th annual HM/HR awards show. They try to call it something else, but even though those in the HM/HR bands might have delusions of grandeur, I don't and won't humor them accordingly.

It was actually really a good night. The categories were pretty lame, as was the production value... things didn't go seamlessly, ever. And all of the winners knew they were winners before the results were announced. Some of the envelopes didn't even have the winner's name inside. The presenters just laughed and read the teleprompter... then the winner walked out.

The BEST part of the night was they'd hand out awards as they were setting up the concert stage, and then they'd have a band play around 3 of their songs.

Chris Jehrico (the host, who should probably stick with pro wrestling) said about one of the first groups, "Look out Bon Jovi, there's a new band from Jersey!" and then he introduced the Dillenger Escape Plan...

I'm no fan of Bon Jovi... but I'd crawl through broken glass to hear them before I'd listen to The Dillenger Escape Plan again. I'm not a real fan of screamo anyway, but all the face cutting and bleeding in the world isn't going to help that plan out...

Halestorm was pretty good. Not nearly the same sound as the studio version though...

Stone Sour was good, but Corey sounds like Corey whether he's with Slipknot or SS, so no surprise there.

Five Finger Death Punch wasn't that good, but then again... that's not really saying much considering...

Danzig was... well... past his prime...

The highlight of the night was actually the last group to perform on the stage. Metallica. They sounded excellent. It'd been a long time since I'd heard Disposable Heroes and when they started the set with that one... I couldn't place the song, but I knew, that I knew it! When James finally started singing I knew what it was... Then they did "The Bell" (which was really good), and called Rob Halford up on the stage and did a Priest song... but finished the set with a song I didn't expect. Every cover band knows the song, but I'd never heard Metallica sing it live until last night, and once again it was great. Seek and Destroy off the Kill 'em All album... their first release.

All told, it was a good show, and when they showed a repeat last night, I watched some of it again. I wasn't going to wait up for the end to see Metallica again... especially since it's on the Tube

Today's mystery lyric: (Remember the rules folks, no online searching of the lyrics, if you don't know it, you don't have the answer!)

Soldier boy, made of clay
Now an empty shell,
Twenty one, only son
But he served us well

Bred to kill, not to care
Do just as we say
Finished here, greetings death
He's yours to take away

Answer to last lyric: I Miss the Misery by Halestorm... For some reason I can see PinTA singing this...
